Personal Invitation to the Innovation “Tech-Law” Conference in Orlando on October 17-18

All readers of this blog know well that technology is outpacing the law. Smart robots with AI are everywhere, not just at the NSA, and the law and lawyers need to keep up. This humble blogger can only do so much on the e-Discovery front to bridge that gap. That’s why I am always looking for quality groups to affiliate with that have the same mission. One of the best I know is IT-Lex, a national technology law 501(c)(3) non-profit group. IT-Lex is dedicated to providing the bench and bar with entertaining educational experiences, the right information from the right people that can help bridge the technology gap. It’s robot lawyer mascot, Lexington, shown right, symbolizes that effort.

IT-Lex focuses on eDiscovery, but is more than that. It also includes information security, privacy and other interesting intersections of technology and law. In that vein, IT-Lex publishes short and, I think, often quite witty, twice-daily articles on technology law issues by a number of authors. But that’s not all. IT-Lex also produces educational videos (including one featuring an attorney serving requests to produce with a shotgun and a bulletproof vest, and being slapped in the face while speaking in binary code), funds a large cash-prize writing competition for law students, publishes a scholarly journal (with content drawn from the winning competition entries), and holds educational seminars, with its first seminar coming up in Orlando on October 17-18 called Innovate.

If you guess that this sounds like maybe another Losey is involved, you would be right. My son, Adam Losey, is the founder and CEO of IT-Lex. Adam has even more energy than I do, and this is his foundation, not mine, although, of course, IT-Lex has my full support. Adam’s wife, Catherine Losey, yet another e-discovery lawyer (yes, we are all lawyers working in technology law) helps out too. As my friend Jason Baron likes to say, we are the Partridge Family of e-discovery!
IT-Lex’s first major national educational conference, the Innovate Conference, is coming up right around the corner on October 17-18 in Orlando, Florida. In addition to the Losey Family, there are a number of A-listers coming to the conference. On the e-Discovery-front there is Jason R. Baron, Maura Grossman, and myself. We will be on a panel together talking about and predicting the future of predictive coding- the first time the three of us will have ever presented together on predictive coding. I think this will also be the first time anyone has presented about the future of predictive coding. We will look at two years out, five years, and ten years. We are all excited about the entire conference and are practicing our crystal ball gazing. Maura promises to keep it practical and all down to earth, or at least try.

Other familiar e-Discovery faces like Ken Withers, Judge Facciola, Judge Nolan, and others will also be speaking. In fact we plan to put Judge Facciola on just about every panel, as that is how he wants it! These are the best of the best, and so even if you already know the scene, you will not want to miss an opportunity to be here with all of us in sunny Florida in October. Just standing in the shadow with the likes of Ken Withers is likely to make you smarter.

But, there is still more. This is going to be a one-of-a-kind event. On the information security and privacy front, the Chief Privacy Officer of the Federal Trade Commission, and a Special Agent from the FBI’s Cyber Intrusion Squad will be presenting. Many others will join them to talk about interesting and timely issues.

The agenda of Innovate has a description of all the speakers and overviews of each topic. The conference is also unique in that all attendees are encouraged to email-in questions or issues salient to the topics to innovate@it-lex.org for inclusion in the conference itself – so if you attend, your active participation is solicited and can even steer some of the conversations.

IT-Lex is hosting the conference at the brand new Alfond Inn, a just-built hotel and conference center in Winter Park, Florida, that is affiliated with Rollins College. The Alfond is a beautiful hotel, and features a recently donated multimillion dollar contemporary art collection. The profits from the hotel go towards scholarships for Rollins College students, meaning IT-Lex is able to support their not-for-profit mission in conjunction with IT-Lex’s in an educational philanthropic-twofer.
