'Larry'O'Duinn' ~IMAGINE that we are on the Trans-Siberian Railway in the early 20th century, traveling from Moscow to Vladivostock.

THE train stops in a nameless village of hovels in Khabarovsk Krai and there is time enough to take a short walk.  WE take advantage of the opportunity despite the bitter cold.

THE vista is one of a frozen, barren, wind-scoured wasteland.
 
THE hovels are among the most miserable in Asia, most emitting a thin tendril of smoke from a stovepipe chimney and a few sporting plastic-covered windows.
THE only identifiable signs of prosperity are a few meager piles of firewood.  THE poverty is ubiquitous, the despair is palpable and there is nothing to eat.

THAT, my friends, is exactly what it is like to be in Klamath Falls!
