THE NUMBERS GAME: RON DERMER ~ ISRAEL'S US AMBASSADOR

RonDermer Appointed As Israel's Next US Ambassador
According to the report, Dermer's candidacy as ambassador has been in question for some time, as he was considered a "red sheet" in Obama administration circles for his perceived support of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in last summer's race.

Army Radio reported that Dermer has managed to improve his ties with the Obama administration, and with Secretary of State John Kerry in particular.

In a recent speech to American Jewish leaders, Dermer said President Barack Obama's support for Israel during Operation Pillar of Defense in Gaza "was superb."

Army Radio reported that the Obama administration has now removed its objection to Dermer's appointment. Obama's recent trip to Israel was apparently instrumental in this regard, the report stated.

Israel News Agency |  Jerusalem, Israel --- July 9, 2013 … Part of the following was communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser to the Israel News Agency.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Ron Dermer as Israel's next Ambassador to the US. Over the past four years, Dermer has served as Prime Minister Netanyahu's senior adviser and previously (2005-2008) served as the economic attache' at the Israel Embassy in Washington.

Dermer is 42, married and the father of five children. Ron is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and holds a master's degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford.

In 2004, Natan Sharansky and Dermer wrote The Case For Democracy: The Power Of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny And Terror which became a best-seller and has been translated into ten languages.

Ron Dermer was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida, as the younger son of Yaffa Rosenthal, who was born in Mandate Palestine and moved to Florida with her parents shortly after Israel won its independence. His father, Jay Dermer, a trial lawyer from New York, became Mayor of Miami Beach in the late 1960s.

Dermer worked as a political consultant for Natan Sharansky in the 1999 campaign, and from January 2001 for nearly three years he wrote a column “The Numbers Game” for the Jerusalem Post. In 2005, while Benjamin Netanyahu served as Finance Minister under Ariel Sharon, Dermer was appointed Minister for Economic Affairs to the Israeli embassy in Washington, a post for which he had to give up his American citizenship. In 2008, after his return to Israel, he became adviser to Netanyahu, who became Israel's prime minister in April 2009.

Currently Dermer is Netanyahu’s most senior adviser. His office is right next to Netanyahu. Dermer is said to run much of the interference with the Obama White House, and is intimately involved in the diplomatic process with the Palestinians. But perhaps is Ron is best known for writing many of Netanyahu’s speeches. He's considered Netanyahu's closest adviser and strategic consultant.

Dermer is married to Rhoda Pagano Dermer. The couple has four children and live in Jerusalem.

"Ron Dermer has all the qualities necessary to successfully fill this important post," said Netanyahu. "I have known him for many years and I know that Ron will faithfully represent the State of Israel in the capital of our greatest ally – the USA. On behalf of the citizens of Israel, I wish him great success."

The Israel News Agency is proud of both Ambassador Michael Oren and the new Ambassador Ron Dermer. We had the pleasure to work with both men and can say without any doubt that Netanyahu has made two brilliant choices - one after the other. Both Oren and Dermer represent what is best about Israel. Intelligent, wise, strong, unfailing perseverance and extremely articulate.

We wish both Michael and Ron much success in the days to come.  http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3040836/posts

Dermer next envoy to Washington

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday named his longtime political advisor Ron Dermer Israel’s next ambassador to the United States.

“Ron Dermer has all the qualities necessary to successfully fill this important post,” Netanyahu said in a press release posted at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

The American-born Dermer, 42, has served as Netanyahu’s senior adviser the past four years, and previously served as an economic attache at the Israeli embassy in Washington.

An Israeli diplomat said it’s useful, given the importance of the US-Israel  relationship, for the Prime Minister to appoint a Washington envoy whom he trusts.

“It has always been the Prime Minister ‘s prerogative to appoint our ambassador to the USA, partially because of the importance of the position and the need for it to be someone the PM trusts and who has the PM’s ear,” he said, speaking not for attribution. “Israel’s professional diplomats work well with any appointment.”

Dermer will succeed diplomat and historian Michael Oren, who announced last week that he plans to step down in the fall after representing Israel in Washington since 2009.

80-year-old ban on hedge fund advertising set to end

An 80-year-old ban on advertising by hedge funds raising money via private offerings may well be lifted following a vote on Wednesday by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The new rule would allow startups and small companies to also raise new funding using advertising. An advisory committee has recommended that the SEC restrict the number of eligible investors by refining its definition of an “accredited investor,” or those wealthy enough to understand the risks involved and be able to weather an adverse outcome, reports Bloomberg. Accordingly, most hedge funds are not likely to take advantage of the change in rules by heavily advertising in print or television, as that is unlikely to attract such accredited investors. Rather, the SEC’s vote may lead to greater flexibility by hedge fund managers to communicate at conferences as well as via their websites. Companies in the US raised $899 billion via private offers last year, compared to $228 billion through registered sales of stock, reports the SEC.
