History

About July 2009, after experiencing the impact financial collapse in 2008, Dr. Needham realized that American and global business was changing forever.  He began to first take a look at history; recalling a George Santayana quote, "Those fail to learn from history, are condemned to repeat it".

Next, he took a look at current corporate structures and leadership and evaluated what needed change an updating since much had not changed in business since the birth of the Industrial Revolution (mid-1700s).  The first reorganization was a hybrid business structure called the Concept Management Company (CMC) where two groups could collaborate: 1) investor's seeking yield (interest rates had dropped) and 2) recent unemployed business leadership (due to the financial crisis) could operate successful franchises if they had an investor.  This collaboration was an immediate success.

Next, Dr. Needham began to research the four major sectors of governance in America: 1) Government, 2) For-Profit Business, 3) Non-Profit Organizations, and 4) Cooperatives.  Most all of these organizations functioned on a top-down form of governance; but Cooperatives seemed to offer more of a collaborative grassroots bottom-up form of governance.  After several months of research, he discovered a new set of laws in Minnesota called the 308B Cooperative Association.  Dr. Needham quickly assembled a team of legal, accounting, consulting, and organizational experts and began to merge the CMC ideas with the new generation of cooperatives.  During this time, Dr. Needham worked with visionaries in a variety of industries to implement several of these new cooperative associations (CoOps), later he developed similar structures in publicly traded companies.  This work continues today.

Next, still wanting to find a path of total reformation of American business structures; Dr. Needham continued his research into governance.  Realizing all great structures are built three times: 1) in a vision, 2) with blueprints, and 3) finally constructed; Collaborative Commonwealth was born first as an idea (a vision), then as a book (a blueprint), and in the summer of 2014 he executed the construction of CollaborateUSA.  CollaborateUSA is collaboration of old and new business ideas using social media as a virtual governance framework.  In June, the first meetings were held and the concept officially launched on July 14, 2014.  Later that month, SPECTRUM Advanced Markets, Inc. let the first contracts and Scope of Work (SOW) for  CollaborateUSA and ultimately  CollaboateWorldWide.  On August 25, 2014, CollaborateUSA, LLC was formed in Alabama as the management company.  Dr. Needham immediately formed steering and membership committees for Collaborate CoOp and it was formed in Minnesota on October 30, 2014.

We expect Version 1.0 our Collaborative Enterprise Community (CEC) will complete Phase 1 of its first nine module rollout in December of 2014, Phase 2 about January 2015 and Phase 3 with the Community Value Exchange System (CVES) by March 2015.  Version 2.0 begins development in January 2015 and should be complete by June 2015 which will see the birth of Collaborate Foundation and CollaborateWorldWide.com.  Version 3.0 will start about June 2015 and is scheduled for completion in December 2015 with full integration of a new business model based on the idea of Framisdortin (see Chapter 8 of Collaborative Commonwealth) and the virtual collaboratory where projects and people enter into the new generation of hybrid collaborative business structures that will change society, governance, and the way business is conducted worldwide with a shared economy birthed from this Collaborative Movement.  All in all over 5 years research and vision casting together with 18 months of technical development will have been invested to bring this vision to reality in just 7 years. We value greatly those who have pioneered and believed this vision with us; these "first followers" are the key to our success!
