The economy is not getting better.  Europe is withering on the vine and Japan is trying to print its way out of trouble, which is just more of the same from the last 20 years, and which has never worked in any nation throughout history.

In the US if the economy is improving why are there ever-increasing numbers of people on food stamps?

There is only one thing that matters in the end at a personal economic level: Your level of economic surplus.

You get up, you go to work, you get paid some portion of the value you add to the company you work for.  You can't get all of that value add because if you did the company would cease to exist; you thus get some part of the economic surplus of your labor.

You then buy food, clothing, shelter, fuel and other necessities.  If you have money left that's economic surplus and with it you can buy an iPhone, a vacation, a nicer car, and so forth.  You can also save some of that economic surplus which is the engine of entrepreneurship as it provides those with new ideas the capital they need to put them into practice.

The simplest way to judge economic surplus in the people as a whole is to look at the various social welfare programs and determine if they are going up or down in participation.  If they're going up then the common person's economic position is getting worse.  If they're going down then the common person's economic position is getting better.  It's not complicated; a person who has plenty of money to buy food does not need food stamps and someone who can afford private health care does not need Medicaid.

The idiot box keeps telling us that things are better, but are they?  Can they be when participation in things like food stamps and similar keep skyrocketing?

I think not, which means that we have seen a gross disconnect between value and price in the asset markets.  That can be maintained for quite a while, as we saw in 1999 and 2006/07, but it cannot be maintained forever as eventually someone will notice that value and price are too far apart, they will sell, and the next person will discern the same thing.

Exactly when this happens is very difficult to determine in advance -- but that it will happen is not open to question -- it will, with certainty, just as it has every time previous through the history of the markets.

On May 15, The Cell published report from scientists in Oregon that they have managed to harvest stem cells from six human embryos bred from donated eggs.

Two embryos got DNA of a child with a genetic disorder (samples taken from skin cells), and the other four were raised with DNA from fetal skin cells.

Shoukhrat Mitalipov, senior scientist at Oregon Health & Science University, has announced elaboration of a breakthrough technology enabling production of personalized stem cells to cure illnesses with this unique human tissue.

“This [research] represents an unparalleled achievement. They succeeded where many other groups failed, including mine,” stem cell biologist George Daley of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute shared with Reuters.
