Three people are dead as storm wreaked havoc across the Northwest US over the weekend, blanketing parts of Washington State with snow and socking Oregon and California with rain.

Officials in the Deschutes County, central Oregon, were investigating three storm-related deaths, including the deaths of a 61-year-old man and an elderly couple.

In Portland, authorities sent out a cellphone alert Sunday urging people to stay indoors following a freezing rain which turned streets and sidewalks into ice sheets.

In addition, authorities issued stern warning for citizens of Portland and southwest Washington against an icy Monday morning commute.

“We expect it will be a slushy morning commute,” Portland transportation spokesman Dylan Rivera said Sunday.

Several schools in Washington and Portland were scheduled to remain closed on Monday after they were shuttered on Friday.

Around forty flights were also cancelled Sunday morning in Portland and other flights were delayed.

On Saturday, freezing rain forced transportation officials to suspend light-rail and street car services temporarily till Sunday.

Forecasters also warned of avalanche conditions across much of Colorado’s high country, especially most of central and northern mountains.

Earlier this month, about a million people across the United States remained without power as storms struck parts of the country, with Pennsylvania being one of the hardest hit states.

The storm dumped more than a foot of snow in some states, closing down schools, business and federal offices and canceling and delaying thousands of flights.
